It is hard for me to imagine you loving anyone more than you love us, but you will. Your heart will shift. Loyalties we once owned will slowly transfer. Adoration will glow for another. We prepare to give you away. That’s what a parent does.
God designed you to fall in love. He designed you to want and need another person. It’s okay to feel like part of a whole.
But remember, with Christ, you already have everything and everyone you’ll ever need. He is complete.
Still, when that crush turns your head for the first time, I’ll remind myself it is all part of the journey. It is all part of God’s design for you to learn to love someone else in the self-sacrificing way that sanctifies. And instead of telling you that you are too young, we’ll engage about what makes a worthy companion, how anyone is not better than no one, and that if you cling to the wrong one, you miss out on the right one.
So, do not settle. Flash impresses, but character endures. Christ-like character.
Christ-like character is patient and kind. It does not envy or boast. It is not proud, rude, self-seeking, or easily angered. It keeps no record of wrong. Christ-like character delights in good and rejoices in the truth. Flash fades but character deepens. So, be kind, but selective.
Only God never disappoints because He loves with perfection. The rest need grace and forgiveness. That includes you, so choose someone willing to forgive. And when you fix your eyes on Jesus with a focus on becoming the person He desires, your other half will meet you there, at the foot of Christ’s cross, their eyes fixed on the Saviour.
What you really want, really need, deep down inside—what you want more than just anyone—is someone who values that gift of Love, respecting all that it cost, and who is willing to lay down their life defending it.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
