Children are a gift from the Lord. The first time those tiny fingers curl around yours, you’ll know. You’ll gaze in wonderment at the fearfully and wonderfully made being tucked into your arms. You will finally understand my love for you.
Now your heart beats outside your body and you understand the depths of parental love. You’ve glimpsed into the future and know you cannot hold this baby forever, just like I could not hold you forever. The day will come when you will have to let go. You’ll watch them walk away with a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, a caregiver. You wave, blinking back tears, with the same brave smile that stretches across my face.
Love lets go, but it never goes away. My job is done. Now it is your turn.
